BandwagonHost is one of the longest-established VPS providers in China’s tech community. I’ve been using it continuously since 2022 and have renewed multiple times; my main plan is CN2 GIA-E. This article captures hands-on experience with choosing plans, data centers, swapping IPs, and migrations.
What CN2 GIA actually is
“CN2 GIA” stands for China Telecom’s Global Internet Access (China Next-generation Network 2 Global Internet Access), split into two tiers:
| Routing | English | Details |
|---|---|---|
| CN2 GT | Entry-tier | Standard international backbone, good quality |
| CN2 GIA | Premium | Commercial-grade direct line, all three domestic ISPs both directions |
BandwagonHost’s CN2 GIA-E (E = Enhanced) keeps CN2 GIA routing across all three domestic ISPs both ways, maintaining speed even during peak hours. Expensive but genuinely reliable.
BandwagonHost’s main plans (2026)
BandwagonHost uses PID (Product ID) to distinguish plans. Common ones:
CN2 GIA-E (main recommendation)
| PID | RAM | Disk | Bandwidth | Annual | Data center |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 87 | 1GB | 20GB | 1TB | ~$50 | DC6 / DC9 CN2 GIA-E |
| 88 | 2GB | 40GB | 2TB | ~$90 | DC6 / DC9 CN2 GIA-E |
| 89 | 4GB | 80GB | 3TB | ~$170 | DC6 / DC9 CN2 GIA-E |
For proxy nodes, PID 87 is more than sufficient. PID 88 (2GB) handles higher-bandwidth scenarios.
Hong Kong CMI (direct-to-HK routing)
| PID | RAM | Disk | Bandwidth | Annual | Data center |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 134 | 2GB | 40GB | 500GB | ~$150 | HK CMI |
| 135 | 4GB | 80GB | 1TB | ~$270 | HK CMI |
Hong Kong latency is lower (25–40ms), but bandwidth is limited and prices higher. Best for latency-critical scenarios (game acceleration, remote work).
Japan SoftBank
| PID | RAM | Bandwidth | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 95 | 1GB | 1TB | ~$90 |
| 96 | 2GB | 2TB | ~$170 |
SoftBank Japan routing has 80–100ms latency; it excels for accessing Japanese services (Twitch, Bilibili JP, some Japanese APIs).
Legacy plans (Quadranet / Fremont, not recommended)
BandwagonHost still offers some cheap plans with standard BGP routing ($20–30/year), but they’re extremely slow during peak hours. Not recommended.
DC6 vs DC9 data centers
BandwagonHost’s CN2 GIA-E has two data centers (both in Los Angeles):
| Data center | Characteristics | My experience |
|---|---|---|
| DC6 | older facility, stable, older IP ranges | used for 2 years with no major issues |
| DC9 | newer facility, same CN2 GIA, newer IP ranges | most new plan allocations here |
Real-world difference: DC6 and DC9 network quality are virtually identical (both CN2 GIA). The main difference is in IP ranges:
- DC6 IPs are slightly more likely to be blocked by certain services (ChatGPT, etc.) because more people use them
- DC9 IPs are newer and have relatively lower block probability
When ordering, the product page will show the data center. If you have a preference, you can request a specific data center in a support ticket.
Annual vs monthly billing
| Billing cycle | PID 87 cost | Average monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $11.99/month | $11.99 |
| Annual | ~$50/year | $4.17 |
| 2-year | ~$95 | $3.95 |
Strongly recommend annual or 2-year billing — 60% cheaper than monthly.
Real-world network performance (CN2 GIA-E PID 87)
mtr test from Guangzhou China Telecom (Apr 2026):
$ mtr -rn -c 50 VPS_IP
HOST: test
1. Guangzhou Telecom gateway 3ms
2. China Telecom backbone 6ms
3. China Telecom intl exit 18ms
4. CN2 core 223.120.x 42ms
5. CN2 GIA Los Angeles POP 155ms
6. BandwagonHost border 156ms
7. VPS_IP 156ms
Average latency: 156ms
Packet loss: 0%
Time-of-day comparison:
| Time | Latency | Download (iperf3) |
|---|---|---|
| 03:00 | 152ms | 180 Mbps |
| 14:00 | 158ms | 150 Mbps |
| 20:00 | 170ms | 100 Mbps |
| 22:00 | 180ms | 80 Mbps |
| 01:00 | 155ms | 160 Mbps |
80 Mbps during peak hours is the CN2 GIA baseline — completely sufficient for residential proxying.
IP quality
BandwagonHost’s IP quality is above-average:
- ✅ Netflix US / ChatGPT / Claude.ai — most IPs work
- ✅ Disney+ / YouTube work normally
- ⚠️ Some IP ranges are marked as “VPS IPs” by AWS / Google Cloud and may be restricted by high-sensitivity services (financial)
- ✅ Google account login and mainstream social platforms work normally
Note: BandwagonHost IPs are allocated from shared physical machines. A single /24 subnet may have hundreds of VPSs, so IP block risk is higher than with dedicated IPs.
IP change in practice
One of BandwagonHost’s biggest strengths: one-click paid IP change.
When you need to change IP
- IP identified by Netflix as “proxy”, unable to watch
- IP blocked by ChatGPT
- IP blocked (inaccessible from mainland)
- Node under DDoS
IP change process
- Log into BandwagonHost → Services → click your VPS
- Find Shutdown VM (power down first)
- After shutdown, Assign New IP Address button appears
- Pay $8.79 (2026 pricing)
- System assigns new IP, ready to use after powering on
Entire process 2–5 minutes — faster than most VPS providers.
IP change gotchas
- The new IP you get might still be blocked: BandwagonHost assigns randomly from a “pending allocation IP pool”, so bad luck and you might get one ChatGPT has already blocked
- One free change per year: new policy after 2024 — each VPS gets one free change per year, beyond that requires payment
- IPs are reclaimed if shut down for over 72 hours: important for those thinking of “temporarily shutting down to save bandwidth”
Data center migration
Scenario: your VPS is in DC6 and you want to migrate to DC9 (or vice versa).
Process:
- Submit a support ticket requesting “Migrate to DC9” (or DC6)
- Ticket response usually within 24 hours
- VPS IP will change after migration completes
- Cost: usually free, one free migration per lifecycle
Note: VM will experience downtime from minutes to hours during migration; users are notified in advance.
BandwagonHost’s operations features
Free snapshots
The control panel supports manual snapshots — up to 2 per VPS. Extremely useful for “system config broken” scenarios:
- configure system → take snapshot
- if config breaks later, one-click rollback to snapshot
- snapshots don’t count toward disk quota
OS reinstallation
The control panel supports common operating systems:
- Ubuntu 20.04 / 22.04 / 24.04
- Debian 11 / 12
- CentOS 7 / 8 Stream (not recommended, EOL)
- Windows Server (requires additional license fee)
Recommend Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12.
KiwiVM control panel
BandwagonHost uses its proprietary KiwiVM panel — feature-complete:
- real-time bandwidth graph (5-minute granularity)
- CPU/memory/IO monitoring
- online VNC (can recover if system is broken)
- reverse DNS (rDNS) configuration
Payment methods
One of BandwagonHost’s friendliest features for Chinese users: Alipay support.
| Method | Fee | Time to account |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay | none | instant |
| Credit card | none | instant |
| PayPal | none | instant |
| USDT | none | 1–2 minutes |
For new users, Alipay is most convenient — no credit card needed.
Pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: bargain plans aren’t CN2 GIA
BandwagonHost has some legacy cheap plans ($20–30/year) using standard BGP routing that are extremely slow during peak hours. Don’t fall for the bargain — usable during daytime, basically unusable at night.
Pitfall 2: assuming both PID 87 and PID 50 are CN2 GIA
Some legacy PIDs use CN2 GT (one tier below), not GIA. Read the plan description carefully before buying, or just stick with the official current main plans: PID 87 / 88 / 89.
Pitfall 3: popular plans frequently out of stock
PID 87 is cheapest and most popular, often out of stock. Solutions:
- register for “out of stock” alerts on BandwagonHost’s official page
- follow restock announcements on NodeSeek / HostLoc forums
- during stockouts you can buy PID 88 (twice the price but usually available), then downgrade later
Pitfall 4: thinking OS reinstallation affects IP
OS reinstallation doesn’t change IP — safe to reinstall. To change IP you must use the Shutdown + Assign New IP process.
4 years of experience
I’ve been continuously using BandwagonHost since 2022 and tried DMIT / RackNerd / Akile and other providers in between. BandwagonHost’s strengths:
- Stable: fewer than 5 total machine outages in 4 years, all with advance notice
- Convenient IP changes: $8.79 one-click swap — no competition here
- Responsive Chinese support: tickets answered in 1–4 hours, Chinese-language support
- Alipay payments: biggest user-friendly feature for Chinese users
Drawbacks:
- Pricier than DMIT / Akile
- Popular plans go out of stock
- IP block probability correlates with user count (because more people use it)
When to choose BandwagonHost
