I’m currently paying $80/month to subscribe to two GitHub Copilot Pro+ accounts. That number seems steep at first, but after three months of use, I believe it’s the best ROI among all my AI subscriptions.

This article breaks down the math so you can judge for yourself whether it’s worth it.

What is Copilot Pro+?

GitHub Copilot has three tiers:

TierMonthly costKey difference
Copilot FreeFreeBasic completions, 2000 completions/month
Copilot Pro$10Unlimited completions, GPT-4o model
Copilot Pro+$19Unlimited completions + advanced model quota

The key differences in Pro+:

  • 1500 advanced model calls/month: includes Claude Sonnet 4.6, Claude Opus 4.6, o3, and more
  • Direct invocation of these models within VS Code / JetBrains / Vim for code generation
  • Supports Claude Code CLI as a backend (OpenClaw integration works the same way)

My use cases

I use Copilot Pro+ mainly for two things:

1. Powering OpenClaw

OpenClaw supports calling Claude Opus through a Copilot Pro+ account on a monthly subscription plan—much cheaper than pay-as-you-go billing. For specific setup details, see: OpenClaw + Copilot parameter tuning

2. Powering Claude Code CLI

Claude Code officially supports using a Copilot API Key as a Claude API substitute, meaning 1500 calls/month can use Opus for heavy-duty tasks, with overage billed to the Anthropic API.

Cost breakdown

If using Claude API exclusively (pay-as-you-go)

Based on my actual monthly usage:

Use caseTokens/monthSonnet costOpus cost
OpenClaw ops tasks~500K tokens~$9~$45
Claude Code programming~800K tokens~$14~$72
Strategy analysis discussions~200K tokens~$4~$18
Total~1.5M tokens~$27~$135

Pure Sonnet would be ~$27/month, pure Opus ~$135/month.

After switching to Copilot Pro+

  • Copilot Pro+: $19/month
  • Covers 1500 advanced model calls (roughly equivalent to 60-80 complex programming tasks)
  • Overflow degrades to Sonnet or pay-as-you-go
  • Actual API supplemental costs (overage): ~$8/month

Total cost: $27/month (two accounts at $54, alternating use extends the advanced quota)

This is roughly the same as pure Sonnet API, but with partial Opus quality.

The real value: allocating quota where it matters

From a pure pricing standpoint, Copilot Pro+ isn’t particularly cheap. Its real value is:

1. Forces you to use the right model for the job

With a monthly quota constraint, I’ve learned what to use when:

  • Simple ops tasks → Sonnet
  • Tasks needing real depth → Opus (monthly 1500-call quota)
  • No quota left → stop wasting Opus

2. IDE integration experience

Writing code in VS Code and hitting Ctrl+I to invoke AI edits right there—no new tabs, full context preserved. This beats switching to the claude.ai webpage by a lot.

3. Account sharing strategy

Running two Copilot Pro+ accounts:

  • Account A powers OpenClaw (always-on background tasks)
  • Account B powers Claude Code (on-demand programming tasks)

The 1500-call quotas are independent per account, effectively doubling the monthly quota.

Who should buy this

Buy Copilot Pro+ if:

  • You code 2+ hours daily
  • Already using OpenClaw or Claude Code
  • Willing to invest time tuning your AI workflows
  • Using VS Code / JetBrains IDEs

Skip it if:

  • Only asking a few questions occasionally → free Claude.ai is fine
  • Just want code completions → Copilot Pro ($10) is enough
  • Mostly non-programming work → Claude Pro subscription is better

How it relates to Claude Pro

Many people wonder if the subscriptions overlap:

Claude ProCopilot Pro+

If you’re primarily coding: Copilot Pro+ > Claude Pro If you do mixed work: Claude Pro is more flexible

I subscribe to both, but if forced to choose one, I’d pick Copilot Pro+.

Money-saving tips

1. Free through GitHub Education

Students / educators can apply for GitHub Education, which includes free Copilot Pro (Pro, not Pro+).

2. Annual payment discount

Annual billing saves 16% vs. monthly. If you’re committed to the long term, it’s more economical.

3. Combined with Prompt Cache

When repeating operations in Claude Code, set up CLAUDE.md as context to hit Prompt Cache, reducing API token spend and effectively extending your quota.
