Many people think having a VPS proxy node is enough—it’s not. VPS IPs come from data centers, and many platforms impose extra restrictions on data center IPs. OpenAI won’t let you register with a data center IP, some platforms trigger additional verification, and accounts get restricted for “suspicious login”… These scenarios require residential IPs.
IPRoyal is a residential IP service I’ve been using long-term. This article clarifies when you need residential IPs and how to use them.
Residential IP vs Data Center IP
| Comparison | Data Center IP (VPS) | Residential IP |
|---|---|---|
| Source | AWS, Google Cloud, and other cloud providers | Real residential broadband ISP |
| Detection Difficulty | Easy for platforms to detect | Extremely hard to distinguish (looks like a regular user) |
| Speed | Fast, stable | Varies by ISP, may fluctuate |
| Price | Low (fixed monthly) | High (pay-as-you-go, billed by GB) |
| Best For | General-purpose proxy | Operations that look like real users |
Data center IPs have known ASNs (Autonomous System Numbers), and companies like Cloudflare and Google maintain blacklists of these IP ranges. Residential IPs come from various ISPs (China Mobile, Comcast, Vodafone, etc.) and are indistinguishable from regular home users.
Typical Use Cases
Scenario 1: Register Accounts That Require Residential IPs
Some services only allow residential IP registration, or registering with a data center IP triggers CAPTCHA verification:
- ChatGPT / OpenAI: Restricts data center IPs in some regions
- Claude.ai: Data center IP registration limited in some regions
- Twitter / X: Bulk registration with data center IPs easily gets accounts banned
- Various US-region accounts: Require US residential IPs to register
Process:
- In IPRoyal, select your target country/state (e.g., California, USA)
- Select a residential proxy plan
- Get the proxy address and port
- Configure it in your browser (recommend Chrome + Proxy SwitchyOmega plugin)
- Verify the IP location, then register your account
Scenario 2: Temporary Fallback When VPS IP Gets Blocked
Your VPS IP suddenly gets blocked, you don’t have another backup node handy, and IPRoyal charges by GB—buy a few GB to get through:
- No monthly commitment, pay only for what you use
- 2-5 GB of temporary usage is usually enough for a few days
- Switch to residential IP while you resolve the VPS IP issue

Scenario 3: Dedicated Line for AI Tools
Some AI tools (Claude API, OpenAI API) have requirements on the calling IP. Using residential IP as the API exit provides better stability and success rate:
Configure IPRoyal proxy as the exit for specific traffic on your server:
# curl through residential IP proxy
curl --proxy socks5://username:[email protected]:10000 \
https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages \
-H "x-api-key: your-api-key"
Configure proxy in Python code:
import httpx
proxies = {
"http://": "socks5://username:[email protected]:10000",
"https://": "socks5://username:[email protected]:10000",
}
client = httpx.Client(proxies=proxies)
response = client.post("https://api.anthropic.com/v1/messages", ...)
Scenario 4: Data Collection
Scrape login-required websites or platforms with crawler restrictions—residential IPs bypass rate limits:
import requests
# IPRoyal rotating residential IP (different IP with each request)
proxy = {
'http': 'http://username:[email protected]:10000',
'https': 'http://username:[email protected]:10000'
}
session = requests.Session()
session.proxies.update(proxy)
# Here you can configure whether to rotate IPs
# Rotating mode: automatically switch IP with each request
# Sticky mode: keep the same IP within one session
Scenario 5: Secure Account Login
You registered your account with a domestic IP, but now need to log in from overseas—use that country’s residential IP to reduce risk:
- US account → Log in with US residential IP
- UK account → Log in with UK residential IP
Avoid triggering “unusual location login” fraud controls and reduce the chance of account lockout.
IPRoyal Pricing
IPRoyal residential IPs are billed by GB of traffic with several plans:
| Plan | Unit Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-as-you-go | ~$4/GB | Occasional use, small volumes |
| Bulk Plans | $2–3/GB | Fixed needs, tens of GB per month |
| Enterprise | Custom | Large-scale scraping |
Compared to other providers (Bright Data, Oxylabs), IPRoyal offers good value for money and stable quality.
Actual consumption reference:
- Register one account: ~50 MB
- One AI tool API session: ~10–50 MB
- Light data collection (100 pages): ~200–500 MB
Personal use typically needs 1–5 GB per month, costing $5–15.
Registration and Usage Flow
- Visit IPRoyal to register
- Select Residential Proxies
- Top up your account (supports credit card/USDT)
- Go to the control panel and select:
- Country: US / UK / JP / HK, etc.
- State/City (optional): Some platforms require state-level precision
- Protocol: HTTP / HTTPS / SOCKS5
- Rotation mode: Rotating (switch IP each request) or Sticky (keep same IP)
- Generate your proxy endpoint and credentials
Standard format:
gate.iproyal.cn:10000:username:password
Integration with VPS Proxies
My proxy architecture:
Primary daily proxy: DMIT VPS (VLESS+Reality / Hysteria2)
↓ When blocked or special scenarios
Fallback: IPRoyal residential IP (pay-as-you-go, no need to keep running)
↓ Operations that need to look like real users
Specialized use: IPRoyal (account registration, platform restriction bypass)
Three layers working together cover basically all needs.
