Grid trading is the longest-running quant strategy I’ve deployed—simple but effective. This article shares my real experience running grid trading on Pionex. It’s not about getting rich overnight, but how to steadily let automated trading help you profit from market oscillations.
What is Grid Trading
Grid trading’s core logic: set multiple buy and sell price levels within a range, buy when price drops, sell when price rises, and repeat to capture the spread.
Essentially, you’re arbitraging market volatility:
Price range: 40,000 - 50,000 USDT (BTC/USDT)
Grid levels: 20
Spacing: 500 USDT per level
When price drops from 45,000 to 44,500 → auto-buy
When price rises from 44,500 back to 45,000 → auto-sell, profit ~1.1%
Works best in: oscillating markets. Trending markets (sharp rallies or crashes) perform poorly.

Parameter Configuration Explained
Price Range
This is the most critical parameter—it directly determines whether your strategy is profitable.
What not to do: randomly pick a range and hope the price oscillates within it.
What to do:
- Review the past 3–6 months of price action and select a range with high probability of repeated oscillation
- Avoid ranges that are too tight (constantly hitting the boundaries) or too wide (insufficient grid density, thin margins)
- Leave adequate safety margins—don’t position the range on the edge of support/resistance levels
Grid Levels
- Too few (< 10): high profit per trade but low trading frequency, poor capital utilization
- Too many (> 50): thin margins per trade, fees eat into profits
- Recommended: 20–30 levels, balancing profit and frequency
Capital Allocation
Never all-in a single grid strategy.
My rule of thumb:
- Single grid strategy ≤ 20% of total capital
- Run grids on multiple symbols to diversify
- Reserve 30% in cash for extreme market moves
Risk Management: More Important Than Profits
Stop-Loss Level
Pionex lets you set a stop-loss price. I recommend:
- Set it 5–10% below the grid’s lower bound
- The strategy auto-stops when triggered, preserving remaining capital
Black Swan Events
In sharp downtrends, the grid keeps buying, leaving you with heavy spot holdings and mounting losses.
Mitigation:
- Always set a stop-loss
- Never run grids with leverage (leverage magnifies liquidation risk)
- Consider manual intervention if the drop exceeds 30%
Mistakes I’ve Made
Mistake 1: Picked the wrong oscillation range
I set the range where a downtrend was just beginning. The price crashed through the lower bound, the strategy stopped, and I held a pile of underwater spot.
Lesson: study the chart before opening a grid. Don’t open grids when a clear downtrend is underway.
Mistake 2: Too many grid levels, fees kill profits
Ran 20 levels for a month—fees ate up nearly 40% of the profit.
Lesson: fees take a bigger bite on low-value coins. Prioritize major liquid pairs.
Mistake 3: No stop-loss set
An altcoin crashed 60%, the grid kept catching the knife, losses were brutal.
Lesson: stop-loss is mandatory, not optional.
Current Performance
I’m currently running grids on several major pairs on Pionex. Overall results:
- Oscillating markets: 2–4% monthly
- Trending markets: roughly breakeven or slight loss
- Extreme moves: stopped out and protected
Not spectacular, but better than idle cash, and it’s fully automated.
