AI services like Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are highly sensitive to outbound IP quality. If you route through a standard datacenter VPS proxy, you’ll often hit:
- Login verification codes
- Identity re-verification requests
- Restricted features (Claude Projects, ChatGPT Plus capabilities, etc.)
- Silent request throttling
The reason: these services’ fraud detection identifies IP origins. Datacenter IPs carry the known “proxy traffic” fingerprint; residential IPs don’t.
The solution: route AI traffic through residential proxies while keeping regular traffic on VPS nodes.
Architecture Overview
Your machine
├─ AI service requests (api.anthropic.com / api.openai.com / ...)
│ └─ Surge → Residential proxy (SOCKS5/HTTP, home ISP exit)
└─ Other traffic
└─ Surge → VPS node (REALITY / Hysteria2)
Residential proxies can be:
- Home router + public IP (optimal, completely authentic residential IP)
- Commercial residential proxy service (IPRoyal, BrightData, etc., pay-per-use)
This guide uses the first approach (router forwarding); the second works identically—just swap the proxy address.
Surge Configuration
1. Add Residential Proxy Node
In the [Proxy] section of your Surge config:
[Proxy]
# VPS node (REALITY)
Reality-HK = vless, your-vps-ip, 443, username=your-uuid, tls=true, tls13=true, sni=www.apple.com, vless-flow=xtls-rprx-vision, reality-public-key=your-pubkey, reality-short-id=your-shortid, client-fingerprint=chrome
# Residential proxy (SOCKS5, pointing to home router's forwarding port)
Residential-Home = socks5, your-home-public-ip, proxy-port
If the residential proxy requires authentication:
Residential-Home = socks5, your-home-public-ip, proxy-port, username=username, password=password
2. Create Proxy Groups
[Proxy Group]
# AI-only group: uses residential IP
AI-Proxy = select, Residential-Home, Reality-HK, DIRECT
# Regular proxy group: uses VPS
Global-Proxy = select, Reality-HK, Residential-Home, DIRECT
# Auto speed selection (non-AI traffic)
Auto-Best = url-test, Reality-HK, url=http://www.gstatic.com/generate_204, interval=300
3. Routing Rules
[Rule]
# Claude
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,anthropic.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,claude.ai,AI-Proxy
# OpenAI / ChatGPT
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,openai.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,oaistatic.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,oaiusercontent.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-KEYWORD,openai,AI-Proxy
# Perplexity
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,perplexity.ai,AI-Proxy
# Google Gemini / AI Studio
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,generativelanguage.googleapis.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,aistudio.google.com,AI-Proxy
# Copilot
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,copilot.microsoft.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,github.com,AI-Proxy
DOMAIN-SUFFIX,githubcopilot.com,AI-Proxy
# Other international traffic
GEOIP,CN,DIRECT
FINAL,Global-Proxy
4. Rule Order Explanation
Surge matches rules top-to-bottom; the first match wins. AI domains go first to ensure they hit the residential proxy and don’t accidentally fall through to Global-Proxy.
mihomo (Clash Meta) Version
mihomo follows the same logic with different config syntax:
proxies:
- name: "Reality-HK"
type: vless
server: your-vps-ip
port: 443
uuid: your-uuid
network: tcp
tls: true
flow: xtls-rprx-vision
reality-opts:
public-key: your-pubkey
short-id: your-shortid
servername: www.apple.com
client-fingerprint: chrome
- name: "Residential-Home"
type: socks5
server: your-home-public-ip
port: proxy-port
# username: username
# password: password
udp: false # Home SOCKS5 typically doesn't support UDP
proxy-groups:
- name: "AI-Only"
type: select
proxies:
- Residential-Home
- Reality-HK
- name: "Global"

Opening the Residential Proxy Port on Your Home Router
If you’re running OpenWrt with passwall / SSR Plus, you can expose a SOCKS5 port on the router:
passwall (OpenWrt):
Main Menu → Access Control → Local Ports → Add a SOCKS5 listener (e.g., port 1080) and select direct exit (bypass proxy, use home ISP directly).
Then open this port in the router’s firewall to allow external access (or use frp/Cloudflare Tunnel for internal network tunneling if you don’t want direct public exposure).
Security notes:
- Exposing SOCKS5 directly to the internet carries risk; add password authentication
- Or access internal SOCKS5 through a WireGuard VPN tunnel instead of opening it publicly
Verify It’s Working
After configuration, test your residential IP exit:
# Check IP via residential proxy
curl --socks5 your-home-public-ip:proxy-port https://api.ipify.org
Should return your home ISP’s IP address, not your VPS IP.
In Surge/mihomo, switch to the AI-Proxy group and visit whatismyip.com to confirm the IP type shows as Residential.
Results
With residential IPs in place, you’ll see:
- Claude (claude.ai) no longer triggers repeated verification
- ChatGPT Plus features no longer hit IP-based fraud checks
- API call stability improves (especially under high-frequency use)
→ See mihomo residential IP setup guide → See Xray REALITY server configuration
