I’ve hit plenty of pitfalls choosing VPS providers. This article shares providers I’ve actually used — straight conclusions, no fluff.
VPS Selection: Core Metrics
VPS for proxy tunneling is different from standard hosting. There are three core metrics:
- Latency: Ping to mainland China — lower is better
- Stability: How likely is the IP to get blocked, and how much line jitter do you see
- Exit quality: CN2 GIA > standard BGP; direct peering > relay
DMIT: My Current Primary
I’m using DMIT nodes in Hong Kong and the US, and I’ve been happy with them for about a year.
Pros:
- Hong Kong nodes have extremely low latency (usually 20–40ms ping from Guangzhou)
- Excellent line quality, native IPs, strong media streaming unlock
- Supports Hysteria2 with noticeable UDP acceleration benefits
Cons:
- Pricey — Hong Kong base tier isn’t cheap per month
- Sometimes the purchase page needs patience for inventory
Best for: Users sensitive to latency and who need high stability.
Tencent Cloud International: Japan Node Backup
Beyond my aws-jp, I keep a Tencent Cloud Japan node as a fallback.
Pros:
- Integrated with China’s Tencent backbone network; Japan node latency is solid
- Occasional heavy discounts make pricing very competitive
Cons:
- Higher IP block probability than DMIT
- Weaker customer support
AWS: Quant-Only, Not Recommended for Proxy
My quant strategies run on AWS — the network is stable, but:
- IP ranges are too well-known, easy to identify and block
- Expensive
- Wrong tool for proxy use; suited for API-facing backend services
Residential IP: IPRoyal
For tasks requiring residential IPs (account registration, strict-access websites), I recommend IPRoyal.
Billed by GB — no monthly commitment, pay as you go. Consistent quality, with country/city selection.
My Current Setup
Primary route: DMIT Hong Kong (lowest latency first choice)
Backup routes: DMIT US / Japan (auto-failover)
Residential IP: IPRoyal (on-demand)
Multi-path redundancy is the key — single points of failure never hold up.
Protocol Selection
After getting a VPS, here’s my protocol advice:
- Xray (VLESS/XTLS): Primary protocol, strong censorship resistance → full deployment guide
- Hysteria2: UDP-based, fast, ideal for high-bandwidth scenarios
- Deploy both protocols together, let mihomo auto-switch → multi-gateway architecture
